How China’s public holidays work

China’s national holiday breaks can include statutory holidays, ordinary weekends and shifted rest days. The annual State Council notice sets the actual days off and the weekend dates designated for work. A seven-day break does not mean seven statutory holiday days.

In 2026, the seven national holiday breaks total 33 calendar days, including weekends and shifted rest days. Six weekend dates are designated as working days.

This reference covers nationwide arrangements in mainland China. It does not cover local holidays or the separate calendars of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

03 / PUT THE DATES TO WORK

Banks, government, logistics & travel

Banks and government offices

Treat holiday breaks as dates to verify service availability. Branch counters, appointment desks and settlement systems may have their own operating schedules. Online services can remain available while processing waits for a working day.

Logistics and business

Confirm collection times, delivery commitments and staff availability directly with your provider. An official adjusted workday does not guarantee that an overseas partner or every private business will be operating.

Travel

Before committing to travel, confirm transport schedules, ticket releases and attraction opening hours. For provisional 2027 dates, choose flexible bookings and recheck once the national notice is published.

04 / CHINESE NEW YEAR

Chinese New Year: factory & shipping notes

The official 2026 Chinese New Year break runs from February 15 through February 23. Individual factories and shipping providers may stop or resume operations outside the national break. Ask your existing partners for their last order, dispatch and reopening dates before setting a deadline.

Planning a shipment? A quick confirmation with your supplier and carrier can prevent a missed handover.

THE DETAILS, EXPLAINED

A few common questions.

Why does China have working Saturdays and Sundays?

China sometimes moves rest days to create longer holiday breaks. The State Council’s annual notice designates specific weekend dates as working days. These are adjusted working days, often called makeup days or 补班.

Does this calendar cover Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan?

No. This reference covers mainland China’s national holiday arrangements. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have separate schedules. Local and employer-specific arrangements can also differ.

Does “holiday” mean every business is closed?

No. The calendar shows national holiday breaks, including weekends and shifted rest days. Shops, attractions, transport and some bank branches may operate. Confirm hours directly with the organization you plan to visit.
